The U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament, its official name, started 32 years ago when 40 community members decided they needed an event to showcase the fall fishing opportunities in the Southport-Oak Island area, according to the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce. A guaranteed $10,000 in prize money was offered that first year, and now the first place winner gets $25,000 and more cash prizes total more than $100,000.
